Yesterday I got a phone call about my last post—from a friend who shall remain nameless. He was confused, convinced that my “Call to Kindness” was some kind of manipulation tactic to get someone to do something for me. He then launched into a tangent about bike paths, eminent domain, and people stealing TVs.
For the record, I’ve got no ulterior motives. I was simply talking about something I think we desperately need more of these days.
Still, I understand the cynicism. It’s easy to assume that kindness always comes with strings attached—that if someone’s being nice, they must want something. Like when your kid suddenly does the dishes, and you know a big ask is coming.
But today, let’s try something different.
Let’s choose to live as sheep, not goats—to do good simply because it’s right, not because there’s something to gain.
“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat,
I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink,
I was a stranger and you invited me in…”
— Matthew 25:31–46
Be kind. Expect nothing. Do good anyway.
